Starter locs: what to expect on your first appointment

Starting locs is exciting, and it helps to know what the first appointment looks like so you feel relaxed and ready.

It begins with a chat. We talk about your hair type, the size and style of locs you want, and how they will grow and change. There is no wrong answer here, it is about what suits you and your routine.

Your locs are then started using a method that fits your hair, usually comb coils or two-strand twists. This takes a few hours depending on the length and thickness of your hair, so come comfortable and bring something to watch or listen to.

To prepare, arrive with clean, product-free hair unless you have booked a wash. Freshly washed hair grips better and gives a cleaner start.

In the early weeks your locs are still settling, so they can look a little loose or fuzzy. That is completely normal. Sleep in a bonnet, avoid heavy products, and resist the urge to fiddle with them.

After that, regular maintenance keeps them tidy as they mature. Within a few months you will see them tighten and take shape, and from there they only get better.
