Knotless braids or box braids: which is right for you?

Knotless braids and box braids are two of the most popular protective styles, and people often ask which one to go for. Both look great, so it comes down to comfort, your edges and the finish you want.

Box braids start with a small knot at the root. They are secure, hold beautifully, and give that classic, defined look many people love.

Knotless braids are fed in gradually with no knot at the base. That makes them lighter and flatter against the scalp, which many people find more comfortable, especially in the first few days. They are also kinder on your edges because there is less tension at the root.

If you have finer hair or sensitive edges, knotless is usually the gentler choice. If you want a bolder, more structured look and your scalp is happy with a little tension, box braids are a lovely option.

Whichever you choose, the aftercare is similar. Sleep in a bonnet, keep your scalp clean and moisturised, and avoid styles that pull too tightly. Looked after well, both will last for weeks.

Still not sure? Book a consultation and we will look at your hair together and pick the style that suits you best.
